YOUR BACKYARD GRASSROOTS GRAVEL RACE

The 9th annual grassroots gravel grinder in Eastern Idaho is coming soon!

May 31st, 2025

REGISTRATION IS LIVE!

The Angry Horse is a not-for-profit, gravel event with two courses interwoven in a high-mountain valley located between the Caribou Range to the east, the Tex Creek Wildlife Management Area to the north, the Snake River Plain to the west, and Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge to the south. This untamed mountain valley and its prairie and grasslands are home to moose, elk, mule deer, badgers, and provides breeding grounds for sandhill cranes and trumpeter swans. The scenery is stunning!

The ride is grassroots and self-supported with primitive aid only offering water and drop bags. Both the Stud Run and Chestnut Mare will be ridden clockwise this year.

The Stud Run is 72 miles of EPIC with 8200 vertical feet of climbing.

Rolling out on the only 8 miles of pavement of the day, the route turns east onto a dirt road and drops riders into the infamous Kepps Crossing and back out with a bruising, but mercifully short climb. A turn to the north for a short bit, the route meanders into the Tex Creek Wildlife Refuge. As the route heads east and north out of Tex Creek, prepare to climb. Kepps Crossing Road and then Skyline Drive will have riders climb for 14 miles and 1700 feet up to Flag Knoll. A ripping descent takes riders down to Dan Creek before climbing over to Horse Creek and back to Bone Road.

This route contains challenging double-track roads and intersections. An accurate navigation file with cue prompts is essential.

Stud Run Route

The Chestnut Mare is a 45-mile route that packs in 4200 vertical feet. The route features two ripping descents and some awesome climbs as well.

The route follows the same beginning as the Stud Run—passing through Kepps Crossing and back up. While the Stud Run route turns north on Bulls Fork Road, the Chestnut Mare continues on Kepps Crossing Road before turning south onto Dan Creek and climbing past Big Horse Butte. A short, but fast descent turns quickly into a climb up and over to Horse Creek. Finally, the climb out of Horse Creek puts riders on their way home with a long, fun descent over to Bone Road. This route gives riders a taste of the beauty this area has to offer and will have them longing to come back for more!
